Microsoft has changed its cloud service's name from ‘SkyDrive’ name to
‘OneDrive’ after losing trademark lawsuit to British Sky Broadcasting
Group. Microsoft's online storage platform SkyDrive will henceforth be known as OneDrive, the company has announced.
"Why OneDrive? We know that increasingly you will have many devices in
your life, but you really want only one place for your most important
stuff. One place for all of your photos and videos. One place for all of
your documents. One place that is seamlessly connected across all the
devices you use. You want OneDrive for everything in your life,"
Microsoft said.
Microsoft
notes in the blog post that the SkyDrive service itself is not
changing, and all users’ content will still remain on OneDrive and
OneDrive for Business as the new name rolls out across Microsoft’s
portfolio. However, the OneDrive preview page
hints there may be new things in store, saying “OneDrive is everything
you love about SkyDrive and more.” The page is currently accepting email
sign-ups from those who want to be notified when OneDrive is live.
